Sliders UK, the leading manufacturer of PVCu patio doors, bi-folding doors and vertical sliding sash windows was on a mission to cut the carbon cost of crime at this year’s Ecobuild. Visitors to Stand S362 were invited to view the company’s Secured by Design product range, which includes the Ultimate In-line Sliding Patio Door and Ultimate High Security Bi-folding Door – the first and only to be awarded ‘Police Preferred Specification’ status. Both products were on display, along with Sliders’ PAS 24 approved and ABC energy rated Vertical Sliding Sash Windows.

According to recent research the overall carbon cost of crime in England and Wales equates to over 12.5m tonnes of CO₂ each year – approximately 2% of the UK’s total CO₂ output. Of this, loss and damage associated with criminal attack accounts for over 6.5m tonnes, whilst action taken as a direct consequence of crime (for example, moving house following a break-in) equates to 5.6m tonnes.

Secured by Design (SBD) is the UK Police flagship initiative, which supports the principles of designing out crime. SBD accreditation is awarded to products and developments that have been designed and tested to meet the high security standards identified by the Association of Chief Police Officers Crime Prevention Initiative (ACPO CPI). Sliders’ Ultimate patio doors were the first patio doors to satisfy these standards in 2009. Following a series of security enhancements, Sliders’ Ultimate bi-folding doors followed suit in February 2011, and are still the only bi-folds with SBD Police Preferred Specification status. This means that Sliders’ bi-folds are now officially the most secure choice, by far.

Specifying SBD accredited products, like Sliders’ patio and bi-folding, not only protects properties and occupants by reducing the risk of crime, but also helps to increase the lifespan of a building by reducing the maintenance work required to repair damage caused by criminal attacks. In fact, research has consistently shown that developments incorporating an SBD-approved specification are half as likely to be burgled, and are at a 25% lesser risk of criminal damage.

Additionally, the Code for Sustainable Homes now awards extra credits to housebuilders if they include Secured by Design products in their building specifications.

Further assisting housebuilders in their mission to reach the highest levels of the Code, the Sliders UK VEKA Vertical Slider offers a traditional sash window frame design with the added benefits of a modern PVCu system, including a superior A, B or C Window Energy Rating. Giving property owners even more assurance and peace of mind, Sliders’ Vertical Slider has just gained BS7950 accreditation and will soon be offered with additional security features.
