BFRC misses the boat
The BFRC issued a sample draft calculation table simulation sheets for doors (resi, French, patio, bi-folding, tilt & slide) to simulators some months ago in an attempt to assess results and ultimately release a door energy rating system.
These have been used to calculate certified U values for all doors ahead of the change in UK Building Regulations (effective October 1st 2010), which specify a minimum U value requirement for doors of 1.8 (1.6 in Scotland) albeit the system has not been agreed or released by BFRC but represents the 'latest available' system.
There have been various arguments over the figures and data and varying interpretations over issues such as sizes. These include, for example, what model (patio or french door) should be used to calculate U values for bi-folding doors there appears at least two different sizes dependant on which Standard is used.
The BFRC have now advised confirmed that the calculation table simulation sheets has have not been ratified and cannot should not be used by simulators to establish U values.
This means that there is currently no BFRC / GGF approved simulation calculation method for doors!
It is our understanding that this will not be rectified before the October 1st deadline. BFRC have missed the boat and a resolution from them is not in sight.
Duraflex are now in discussions with BBA and FENSA to use an alternative calculation method. In order to avoid future arguments and confusion this will be based on European directives on size and certain other criteria. This data should be available within the next few weeks.
FENSA have advised indicated that they will not be carrying out any checks on installations (on doors in respect of U values) before December. It is likely that even after then there will be a “softer landing” than has been anticipated thanks to the problems with implementation of the new regulations.
Draw your own conclusions but do not believe anyone who tells you that they have BFRC approved U value simulations for doors.
